From A Pet Sitter’s Perspective (keys)

When hiring a professional pet sitter, it’s important that more than one copy of your house key be accessible.

It is standard policy for most professional pet sitters to require two or more copies of clients’ keys.

As perfect as your professional pet sitter would love to claim to be, here are a few reasons why more than one copy of your house key is required:

  1. The pet sitter loses the key.
  2. The pet sitter locks the key in the client’s house.
  3. Getting into your house through your garage is not reliable as sole entrance.
  4. If your friend/neighbor has a copy of your key, there’s always a chance they will not be available when your professional pet sitter needs to contact them. As a result, more time is put into your home/pets than what you originally schedule for, which means additional charges.

If you simply cannot trust your professional pet sitter, it’s highly recommended that you stick with a family member or friend.

You must have a good relationship with your professional pet sitter. Lack of trust will not work.

If you don’t want your professional pet sitter to hold onto your key for future visits, here are several realistic situations to consider:

  1. If you ask your professional pet sitter to leave the keys in the house on the last visit, they will not have access to your house from that point forward. If your trip is delayed, your pets and home will not be cared for. Flights are constantly being delayed never mind other circumstances beyond our control. (BocMeow does not offer this as an option.)
  2. If you ask your professional pet sitter to place keys under mat/planted pot, etc, you are taking a huge risk towards your home being robbed. While it may be worse case scenario, you just never know in our society. Why take that risk?  (BocMeow does not offer this as an option)
  3. You have to pay an additional fee each time your pet sitter picks up or drops off a key.

Keep in mind, a professional pet sitter makes a living out of caring for pets and homes.

Professional pet sitters have an organized system to ensure that all bases are covered, including keys. Most professional pet sitters keep keys in a safe location and have a specific code to keep track of all keys-no personal information is ever written on client keys. (BocMeow NEVER writes any personal information on client keys).

A professional pet sitter looks out for your best interest and does everything within their power to make sure your pets and home are safe.

Professional pet sitters who request more than one copy of your key are prepared and organized. Which would you rather have, a professional pet sitter or the neighborhood kid next door? (BocMeow requires two copies of your key.)
